  10. Almost Finished Features
  11. ────────────────────────
  12.     This is an Alpha Release of WML ── I almost feel good enough about
  13. this verion to call it the "real thing," but there are still a couple of
  14. things I need to fix and I won't feel quite right until then.  By the
  15. time I reach version 2.1 WML should have these items finished:

  17. 1. Mouse support will soon be installed on every screen, including
  18.    Groups and Abbreviations data entry (where, at this time, the
  19.    keyboard must be used instead).
  20.  
  21. 2. ASCII import will be completely definable soon.  I plan to make it
  22.    work just like the DBF Import so you can import _any_ comma-delimited
  23.    ASCII file.
  24.  
  25. 3. Postal (PostNet) bar codes print only on envelopes at this time.  By
  26.    version 2.1 they will also print on dot matrix and laser labels.

  74.     The above files may be copied & shared freely as a complete, unmodified
  75. set. Files marked with [*] are not needed during operation of WML and may be
  76. deleted from a disk if space is a premium, however, please include _all_ of
  77. the files in copies of WML you distribute.  If you use INSTALL it will
  78. remove some of the unneeded files.  I would appreciate it if you would keep
  79. the ORDER.FRM file handy on your disk until you decide whether WML suits
  80. your needs.  Thank you!

  82.     The Registered Edition contains extra files which are to be used only
  83. by registered users.  Please keep these files only for yourself:
  84.  
  85. CONFIG.WDT    Your registration file (and configuration file, too). If you
  86.               share this file everyone will have your name on the screens
  87.               and reports.
  88. FONTS.EXE     Soft fonts for PCL laser printer, including a postal bar code
  89.               font (self-extracting archive)

  92. Installation Notes
  93. ──────────────────
  94.     If you received your copy of WML on disk it has an installation programme
  95. on it.  Using INSTALL is faster than installing/updating manually and it
  96. will not touch your AUTOEXEC or CONFIG.  Just put the floppy in a drive and
  97. type "d:INSTALL" where "d:" is the floppy drive letter (e.g., "A:").
  98.  
  99.     When INSTALL is finished it will offer to unpack the included archives.
  100. WMLDATA.EXE is only on 360k disks.
  101.  
  102.      WMLDATA.EXE will automatically be extracted since it is required for
  103.       WML to run
  104.      WMLDOCS.EXE contains the documentation files (see below)
  105.      FONTS.EXE contains PCL soft fonts.  Soft fonts can reside in any
  106.       directory on any disk except for MailCode.SFL which *MUST* be in the
  107.       WML directory. If you put soft fonts in another directory, remember to
  108.       move MailCode.SFL back into your WML directory or you will not get any
  109.       bar codes on envelopes.
  110.      WFF*.EXE contains the latest version of What Floppy Format? which lets
  111.       you format floppies to any density from within any of my software
  112.       packages.  You must have FDFORMAT (which is another free product)
  113.       to use WFF.
  114.  
  115.     If you have received WML from a bulletin board it would be best to:
  116.     1. Make a directory for it (for example, "MD \WML")
  117.     2. Go to that directory (e.g., "CD \WML")
  118.     3. Extract the archive.  I put all of the WML files together into a
  119.        self-extracting archive (an EXE file).  When you run this EXE file
  120.        it expands each of the files in the archive and returns to DOS. This
  121.        is convenient because you don't need any other programme, such as
  122.        PKUNZIP or ARJ, to unpack the archive -- it does it all by itself.
  123.        However, many BBSs don't like anything but ZIPs or ARJs or whatever
  124.        their chosen format is, so you may receive the WML2*.EXE archive
  125.        inside of a ZIP, ARJ, etc.  So, according to your situation, do
  126.        these steps:

  128.        a. Unpack the archive
  129.           i. If it is an EXE file, just type its name
  130.          ii. If if is an ARJ, LZH, ZIP, ZOO, SDN, etc. then use the
  131.              appropriate software to unpack it (for example, "LHA E WML20Y")
  132.        b. Check the file list above to see if there are other EXE archives
  133.           which were inside of the archive you just expanded.  If so, loop
  134.           back to step (a).

  136.     4. Type "WML" and set your Preferences.

  139.     Installing on a Single Floppy Disk
  140.     ──────────────────────────────────
  141.     WML can be run from a single floppy disk drive, although it will run
  142. _very_ slowly as its primary function involves working with disk files. To
  143. keep the size and complexity of WML to a minimum, data files must be in the
  144. same directory as the EXE file which means that everything has to fit on a
  145. single floppy disk.  If you only plan to use WML once a year to send
  146. Christmas cards this method will probably work fine.  But if you will use
  147. WML regularly or have more than 50 or 100 addresses to track, I strongly
  148. suggest using a bit of your hard disk space for WML.
  149.  
  150.     Always have a floppy disk copy of the programme which is not being
  151. used.  When using only floppies, this means having an extra copy: one to
  152. use and one to keep as a back-up.  Use "Diskcopy a: a:" to make a working
  153. copy of the floppy disk, if necessary.  Then delete the documentation and
  154. other files marked with [*] above -- this will give you more room for your
  155. data.  The end result is about 250k of space used.  Thus, you can fit about
  156. 100 entries on a 360k disk and about 600/1200/1500 entries on a
  157. 720k/1.2Mb/1.44Mb disk.

  160. Documentation Files
  161. ───────────────────
  162.     On disk, WML contains WMLDOCS.EXE, a self-extracting LHARC archive
  163. (LHARC is (c) 1991 by Haruyasu Yoshizaki).  I am using LHARC to keep WML on
  164. a 360k floppy without sacrifices.  WMLDOCS contains two files: WML.TXT and
  165. WML.WP. To extract the documentation just type "WMLDOCS."
  166.  
  167.     If you have WordPerfect 5, just load WML.WP.  Instructions to reformat
  168. and print are in a comment at the top of the file.  If you don't have
  169. WordPerfect or a way to convert the WML.WP file to your word processor, then
  170. just "TYPE WML.TXT > PRN" at the DOS prompt.  WML.TXT is an ASCII file
  171. generated from WordPerfect for a "standard printer" and this command will
  172. send it to the printer on port LPT1:.  You can substitute the "PRN" with
  173. "LPTx:" where the "x" is 1, 2, or 3.

  176. Using WML with EXE compressors
  177. ──────────────────────────────
  178.     WML is compressed with LZEXE by Fabrice Bellard, a public domain EXE
  179. compressor (merci, Fabrice!).  This saves over 150k of disk space and causes
  180. a pause of only ½ to 2-seconds during initial loading on 386/20 and 386/40
  181. CPUs. A worthwhile trade-off, I think.

  184. Advantages of WML
  185. ─────────────────
  186.     I've done a fair amount of snooping around BBSs and so far I've found
  187. nothing quite like WML.  My good friend, beta tester, and sysop of The
  188. Researcher's BBS in California, Skip Taylor, tells me that WML beats out
  189. the commercial products My Mailing List and FastPack Mail in almost all
  190. areas.  And FastPack Mail is a $100+ package!!  That made me feel good...
  191.  
  192. 1. WML manages and prints lists and has lots of features in both areas
  193.  
  194. 2. WML handles TWO print devices ── a PCL laser printer for envelopes and
  195.    laser labels, AND a dot matrix printer for continuous labels of any type.
  196.    You don't have to buy two separate versions of the software such as with
  197.    Avery's commercial package.  I will support PostScript (I think I can)
  198.    if somebody would send me the relevant information.

  200. 3. WML supports all label types.  If your label type is not listed in
  201.    the menu just modify a definition or create a new one.
  202.  
  203. 4. WML has integrated back-up/restore functions.  I've learned that an easy
  204.    way to back-up a computer makes all the difference in whether or not it
  205.    is done.  This makes it easy.
  206.  
  207. 5. WML can import and export lists to/from many environments, including
  208.    WordPerfect, Word, Ventura Publisher, and "generic" ASCII text.
  209.  
  210. 6. WML will print bar codes on envelopes automatically!  All you need is
  211.    MailCode.SFL in your WML directory (this file is now provided with
  212.    the unregistered version).
  213.  
  214. 7. WML is shareware.  Try it for 60 days and see whether you can live without
  215.    it. For just $25 you can have WML with soft fonts and the latest copy of
  216.    WFF. And that 7-second pause at start-up will go away!
